This 2" 30mm Explore Scientific is an excellent low power eyepiece with
an ultra-wide 82° field of view, one so wide you have to move your head
from side to side to see it all. It is particularly suited to get the
maximum image brightness and field of view out of big Dobsonian scopes,
but will work well with any scope that can use 2" eyepieces, even an
f/15 Maksutov. Viewing through this 30mm Explore Scientific makes you
feel like you’re floating above the Earth, taking a space walk, rather
than looking through a telescope eyepiece. If you want a truly relaxed
and unconfined “picture window" view of the Universe, this is the
eyepiece for you.
With an f/4.5 Dobsonian reflector, this 30mm
eyepiece has a very large 6.7mm exit pupil larger than some observers’
eyes can dilate. That can effectively waste some of the Dob’s light
gathering capacity for those observers, as some of the full light cone
will fall on their iris, rather than entering his or her eye. Even so,
many observers are willing to trade a little light gathering for the
jaw-dropping fully-immersive view through this 82° apparent field
eyepiece. If you want to see the big picture, this is an eyepiece you
will treasure for years to come.
In addition to its wide field,
the 30mm Explore Scientific has an extra benefit for you. It is O-ring
sealed and nitrogen-purged to be 100% waterproof. This prevents internal
fogging in the eyepiece; keeps the interior dust-and fungus-free; and
makes it easier to clean, as there is no risk of excess cleaning
solution getting trapped between the lenses.
The latest computer
design programs have been used to optimize its performance. Its six
element/four group design uses low dispersion and high refractive index
lenses and full multicoatings for high contrast, high resolution, and
flat field images across its very wide 82° field of view. The lens edges
have been blackened to improve contrast.
A 12" f/4.5 Dobsonian
reflector gives you a full 1.79° field at 45.7x with this eyepiece, well
over three lunar diameters, and easily able to encompass all of the
Pleiades or Orion in one field. You get over seven minutes of
uninterrupted observing with such a scope while an object drifts from
one side of the sharp and flat eyepiece field to the other. That’s
plenty of time for multiple observers to look at the same object, or for
you to absorb as much detail as possible, before having to reposition
the scope. Even an 8" f/10 catadioptric has a 1.23° field that’s almost
two and a half lunar diameters across, for thrilling views of the larger
nebulas, like the Omega and Orion. Use the calculator below to see just
how wide a field you’ll get with your particular telescope.
With
21mm of eye relief, this 30mm Explore Scientific eyepiece provides
unvignetted views for eyeglass wearers, although the 82° field of view
is so wide that even non-eyeglass wearers can’t see the whole field at
once. All observers have to move their eye from side to side to see out
to the field stop.
The eyepiece has a soft fold-down rubber eyecup and comes with dust covers for both ends of the eyepiece.
All 82° Series eyepieces are fully multi-coated and edge-blackened to produce maximum contrast.
Using advanced computer design, combinations
of low dispersion and high refractive index optical glasses, and durable
multilayer deposition coatings, Explore Scientific 82° Series™ extreme
wide field eyepieces are optimized to produce high contrast, high
resolution, and superior flat field characteristics.
The visual effect of these eyepieces with
their long eye-relief and their 82° apparent field is truly a
full-immersion experience. Your eye is relaxed, allowing you to easily
use the "averted vision" technique to study faint details across a huge
field-of-view.

Precision
polished eyepiece lenses are lowered into a bath chamber for ultrasonic
cleaning to rid the lenses of dirt or other contaminants prior to the
multi-layer transmission coating process. |
|
Each eyepiece is meticulously assembled into
precision machined metal lens barrels that maintain the perfect
alignment of the optical train for years of rugged use in the field. The
82° Series eyepieces come with a twist-up rubber eye-guard that raise to
the desired height for the comfort of the observer, and as experienced
astronomers know, eye comfort is critical when trying to observe at the
visual limits of the telescope.
To keep internal reflections to a minimum, all
internal surfaces of the eyepiece barrel are flat black, as well as the
edges of the lenses themselves to minimize the scattering of light
within the lenses themselves. |
In today's modern telescope industry
there are many fine companies to choose from manufacturing top quality
eyepieces. We invite direct side-by-side comparison with any other
eyepiece of similar design, and we back our eyepieces with our exclusive
Five Year Limited Warranty.* We think that you will find Explore
Scientific eyepieces rank among the finest obtainable and represent an
outstanding value.
*Limited Warranty is one year, extended to five years when product is registered within 60 days of purchase.

Developing our new eyepieces we wanted
to take a fresh perspective and address several points. Our goal was to
produce an ultra-wide angle design that provides pride of ownership at a
great value:
Focus on Value - We invite direct comparison to any eyepieces on the market in their category.
Protection from the Outdoors
- By making the eyepiece body nitrogen-purged and waterproof eyepiece
internal elements will remain as pristine as the day they were
assembled. The sealed, dry environment is impervious to internal fogging
and contaminants such as fungus growing in between the lens elements.
Our waterproof eyepiece is easier to clean, and there is no risk of
cleaning solution migrating from the top of the lens and seeping around
edges to be trapped in between elements. To insure a perfect seal we
test every eyepiece in one meter of water for 30 minutes.
Creating an Identity
- We look at purchasing fine optical equipment as an investment, and it
should be treated as such. With a unique serial number on each
eyepiece we can track when a product was made, and the owner can
document their equipment for insurance and warranty purposes.
Providing Peace of Mind -
Explore Scientific stands behind our products with a free 5 Year
Transferrable Limited Warranty upon registration of the product. Want to
trade or sell your eyepiece? You’ll get more value if its remaining
warranty can be transferred to the new owner.

Each and every Explore Scientific eyepiece is inspected both at the factory and again at our facilities.
Here we are making final visual and cosmetic inspections where we check
for assembly integrity, cleanliness, and optical performance (including
a test for visual image edge consistancy) before shipping them to our
customers.
